I have a database which was working fine for several years. From this week, performance is slow. Sometimes, the database opens fast but opening a document takes about 10 seconds. (Documents with only text and with 1 little table, everything only from Notes Client, not Web). From an opened document I can create a response document. For this I uses a button with Lotus Script:
Dim w as New Notesuiworkspace
Dim thisdoc as Notesuidocument
set thisdoc = w.CurrentDocument
REM Do some stuff of the opened uidocument
call thisdoc.save
Dim newdoc as Notesuidocument
set newdoc = w.ComposeDocument(“servername”,“filename.nsf”,“formname”) → Takes long time, sometimes more than 10 seconds
call thisdoc.Close
Database has 34.000 documents and is 192 MByte. Not spectacular
No unreadmarks are maintained.
The database was created with Designer R5, I compacted to upgrade the file format to ODS43 (We are using now R 7.0.1). I did a fixup
What else can I do.
How can I look where the problem is?
This is the only database which gives this problem.
In my experience, which, without betraying my advanced years, let’s just say I’ve jogged around the block a few times, you won’t get long lasting relief from your solution. You’ll probably get a week or so before the same problem crops up again.
Your problem is presumably related to view indexes or unread marks or deletion stubs, all of which would be temporarily ‘cleaned up’ by what you’ve done.
Try my TEST form test once your problem comes back and see if there is a marked difference. If so, that indicates that you may want to look at your form code to optimize it.
Also in other databases (my own mailfile for example) things are slow. I believe it is related to my first question in this thread: when I open an exisiting document in my mailfile, I change something and save the document. Then whne I want to open the document again immediatly, this takes long time ( 30 seconds). Other documents open fast. Only documents I just saved open slowly. Also other databases have the same issue.
Could it be caused by the same issue as the problem described in my first question in this thread?
Thanks for yoursecond reply. I don’t know if your answer is making me happy. But yet, now I have some test-procedures which you gave to me.I hope the problem does not come back. If so, I will try your suggestions.
Is this the only db that you use on this server in a meaningful way? If it is, then maybe other db’s are slow but you just don’t realize it.
Create a new form called TEST and just put a text field in it with no formulas, no event code. Make a single view to display these test documents. Create and save a couple. Fast or slow? If slow, then the problem is likely unrelated to your db, it’s the server that’s slow. If fast, then the problem is likely related to the code in your regular forms.
If the server seems slow (from above) then do some troubleshooting with respect to indexer and agent manager, as those are frequently the culprits. Lots of things you can check, of course, disk space, ram, network, etc. There are some articles in DeveloperNetwork IBM - United States
If it seems like it’s the form in your db, then examine the code there. If it just started being slow, then either your design recently changed (???) or else there are some dblookups that are getting slower because there is increased data. At least, those are two great places to start.
