8 gb mailfile!

Hello,

can anybody tell me how long it takes to archive an 8 gigabitye mailfile? Is this a process which can cause technical problems (because of the size)?

Thanks a lot!

I have several mailfiles larger than that (even >20 gb), never had performance problems. But I think my (or another response) is useless without knowing your specs about hardware, loads etc. Just my humble opinion.

Generally, the size won’t be a problem for archiving or other operations, it will just impact performance and take much longer to complete them.

One place where large file size can possibly cause a problem is in on-line backups. I’ve seen backups hang on large files in some cases, on Windows I believe the last issue I saw was on 2003 Server when there’s wasn’t enough free space for the volume shadow copy, which was resolved by making more space available to that process.

In terms of time to complete archiving, as the other poster mentioned it depends on many different factors, so it’s impossible to give you a good estimate. If time is an issue, you could look at either migrating the user over to a new nsf file on the server and keeping the old file in palce as the “archive,” or setting up scheduled server side archiving and letting the archiving process take place during off hours.
