8.5.1 Client randomly slow to launch. Some mornings, fine. Others not. 3 to 4 minutes.
Have removed Mcafee lines from notes.ini way back.
Applied FP2 to the users who reported the issue the most.
Network backbone and servers completely up to date hardware etc wise. Were no issues with Notes 7.x, and no other issues with anything on network.
Any ideas? Is it maybe just Mcafee scanning the Notes program folder, as this post speculates?

You should re-check the notes.ini for the “EXTMGR_ADDINS=NCExtMgr” and “AddInMenus=NCMenu” entries. Any McAfee patches tend to sneak those parameters back into the notes.ini and they really hurt client performance.
We also exclude the entire Notes directory (and all sub-directories) from AV scanning. This is also noted in this technote:

Believe me, I have been watching for those two params in case they sneak back in.
We might give your directly exclusion idea a try.
btw, the technote which i’d read similar to, talks about exluding the program files directory; do you exclude the data directory as well?
Subject: Other thougths on slow client startup
Watching the the McAfee On-Access Scan Statistics when you start up Notes can be enlightening (especially if you haven’t excluded the Notes directory structure).
I’ve noticed that the Notes 8.x client seems to be impacted more than other software by a busy disk. Perhaps it’s the quantity of eclipse-related files.
Perhaps some other software is keeping the disk busy and affecting Notes. AV updates and other patching come to mind. For example, we’ve used products like Lumension Patchlink which really seem to hammer the disk when they are updating their inventory information at system startup.
Subject: data folder
Yes, we also exclude the data folder.
Sincerely,
Eric
