I tried to upgrade my notes from 8.0.2 to 8.5.1 yesterday. The install hung halfway through and rolled back. When it was done, I had no working notes client. Did a couple of reboots and over, and over again. Now, every time I click through the setup prompts and press install I get the following message:
File not found: C:\Users<myusername>\AppData\Local\Temp\pft5A15.tmp\deploy\install.xml
Watching the temp folder during the install process, there is a pftXXXX.tmp folder created, but it’s not named exactly the same. I’ve done everything that I can think of. Cleared the registry of lotus items, deleted the lotus program files folder, cleared my temp folder and c:\windows\temp. I’m completely stuck.
My hunch is that notes install left some flubbed install settings file somewhere on my machine, and it’s picking up those settings every time. Any ideas? I was so looking forward to 8.5.1, but this seems a little ominous.
Also, win7 x64. Installing from notes_designer_admin_851_w32_CZ5S0EN.exe
Big thanks to whoever can help.

A couple additional items to check …
In addition to the Registry branch that Simon suggested removing, also take a look in HKey_Current_User\Software\Lotus\Notes\Installer.
You might find that needs eliminating.
Also, I’ve found a couple times that there were issues with the whole \Framework folder. You can delete it, along with \Workspace. They will rebuild …
Subject: This can work sometimes.
Normally I tend to break clients a lot (intentionally). So if I need to revert and don’t have a clean VM image I do the following.
***** Important *****
These steps are used for cleaning a test machine. If you don’t know what you are doing you can potentially damage your machine. So it is presented “as-is” and use at your own risk.
If you are not in charge of deployment of your client you should talk to your support + administration to help you and not use these steps.
-
Attempt the uninstaller and then reboot after (or if asked). 99% of the time this should resolve your issue.
-
Make sure no notes processes are running on startup (eg. Minder, NSD service, 3rd party apps).
-
Rename the notes folder to something else like “IBrokeNotesAgain”.
-
In the registry I remove the “HKLM\software\lotus\notes” tree.
-
There is an app called “CCleaner”
Run that and select “Registry” and scan for issues and fix issues. You need to run 2-3 times to totally clean the registry of keys related to notes.
After that the installer is running clean. You can then manually pick the data files back from the backup folder.
