6.5 Gripes and Grumbles

I have been experiencing these issues with the 6.5 client:

  • EXTREME slowness when selecting File - Database - Open or File - Database - New. Open dialog takes > 40 seconds to appear, New dialog takes > 60.

  • Equally extreme slowness when starting Admin client or Designer.

  • Multiple NSD crashes per day

In addition to these problems, I have the following questions:

  • Why is the iNotes design in 6.5 the older (pre 6.02) style?

  • How come the IM client is so limited in functionality? (i.e. can’t send a file, can’t keep contact list on top, etc)

  • WHERE are the SPRs for 6.5 posted?

  • And for that matter, WHEN is IBM going to get their jumble of web sites back into some sort of USEABLE collection of Notes/Domino links? (a la Notes Net)?

Subject: But my response time - still not explained

I downrevved myself back to 6.02 and the file-database-open is again split-second, New is about 10 seconds. Admin and designer also take about 10 seconds from click to useable.

Bill, what platform are you running on? My workstation is running XP with SP1, processor is a P4 2.4Ghz, 512MB ram. Not a dog by any means.

The server - is the server relevant when launching Admin or Designer? The server is running 6.02CF1 on Win2000 A.S., three processors @700Mhz, 3.5 GB RAM and an optimized disk array with seperate OS and swap drives on different controller. (Also not a dog).

It really looks to me like the client is the culprit here. I’ve tried compacting the workspace and deleting the cache.NDK, etc. I have not actually removed it completely and done a virgin installation. That would be more trouble than the new client is worth. (to me)

What is happening when you hit ? do you see a lot of disk thrashing locally?

Thanks, Bill, for your help, you’ve lead me down the path to salvation.

I took the plunge, completely uninstalled the client, removed all traces of Lotus from the registry, rebooted, and reinstalled 6.5…

It worked perfectly.

I then replaced my Desktop6.ndk with my original one, as well as my original names.nsf.

Still works perfect.

At this point, I’m scratching my head. Wasn’t the desktop file, address book, the cache, or the the ini, since I reused the first two and had previously deleted the other two. Wrong DLL? Bad reg key?

I don’t know. I will retract my statements about performance and chalk them up to circumstance. (and my overlooking the newly named template).

I will, however, stand by my comments about the IM client, and the confusing mess that used to be nice, neat, Notes.net.

Subject: Yup, Agreeing with you about the IM client. Hope we get the full thing integrated soon.

Could have been the cache.ndk file. What do you have here:

Subject: My File, Database, Open call is in the sub 1 second timeframe. Only had 1 NSD while Debugging w/ the Admin Client open and switching windows.

Something else must be wrong w/ your configuration or machine. Your iNotes mail template is still probably based on inotes60.ntf. You should replace the design w/ the inotes6.ntf.

There are only two templates on my 6.5 server for iNotes:

inotes5.ntf

inotes60.ntf

So, yeah, it’s based on iNotes60.ntf.

I guess I’ll retract the question and ask instead: Where’s the iNotes6.ntf template in 6.5?

Subject: There should be a “Domino Web Access (6)” → inotes6.ntf

Subject: D’oh!
