6.5.4 Incremental Installer Doesn't

Just downloaded the incremental installer for the Notes Client, Admin, and Designer and tried running it against a 6.5.3 installation. It barfed very quickly advising me that it could not find the following file “Lotus Notes 6.5.3.msi”. Moreover, I could not find the temp directory created by running the installer. I will download it one more time to see if corruption of the file is the problem, but I find this behavior very odd.

You have to have the previous full installation file “Lotus Notes 6.5.3.msi” which really sucks. Search your C:\ drive for it and then refer the patch installation program to it when prompted.

I deleted this 81Mb file after the 6.5.3 upgrade, so I have to wait for the 80-100Mb new Upgrade “Kit”, and cannot use the “Patch” file.

So far, Lotus hasn’t come out with the 6.5.4 Upgrade “Kit”, just the 25Mb “Patch”. They say they have by the description on the DL page:

Software update: Notes, Designer and Admin Client Upgrade Kit 6.x to 6.5.4 for Windows 95(Notes Client only), 98/NT/2000/XP English

Operating system: Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows XP | Version: 6.0.5 | Size: 106 MB | Release date: 07 Apr 2005

But it actually is the 6.0.5 version, even though it says it will take you to v6.5.4.

These upgrades are not disk space friendly when they leave the whole upgrade file on your HD after the upgrade, and then demand it for the next. I’m really tired of software bloat. Yea, we have big HD’s, but why clutter them all up.

IBM/Lotus is really getting sloppy with its releases. Before, we were innundated with CD’s. Now, we cannot seem to get them, as would be the case for 6.5.3. I kept checking back and finally settled on the downloaded software. Ergo, I cannot use the incremental installers. I downloaded the “fuller” version of 6.5.4 and that got me going, however this one will not handle multi-user installations on one machine. Half my machines are still sitting at 6.5.3. Shame on you Lotus. The least you could do is put some sort of README file up there so we don’t waste our time.

It’s really a Windows Installer issue needing the msi files, not necesarrily an issue with Notes alone. You’d have the same problems if you were working with Office. The question is why does Lotus continue to use Windows Installer technology when there are alternatives out there…

Does Smart Upgrade require the incemental installer files? Or could I extract the full version to the network, and let users run setup.exe?

My issue is upgrading remote sites not on the network. I suppose I could try some VPN kludge.

Well, I obtained the Lotus Notes 6.5.3.msi file and ran the v6.5.4 incremental update c82h5na.exe. It hosed my whole Lotus Notes Client installation. Received a “Data1.cab” error and then it said the the upgrade failed, but nothing had been changed on my system.

Wrong, Notes was completely deleted except for my user data files. I have to re-install tomorrow from the factory CD…

IBM, please come up with another way to provide upgrades!!! Version 5 incremental upgrades were a snap.

I installed v6.5.1 from the IBM factory disk, upgraded to v6.5.3 with the full upgrade kit, and then attempted to upgrade to 6.5.4 with the patch kit. Same thing, it wasted my v6.5.3 installation due to this error:

Had to start all over and am currently running v6.5.3

I’m sure you’ll be happy to know that the regular client upgrade works just fine. I too had my Admin/Designer client hosed. I download the full version of 6.5.4 (Admin/Designer) and everything works great now on 6.5.4.

Thanks for the reply!

I tried it, but when it finished loading, it displayed that it was going to install v6.0.5 so I quit. Also, I just run the client.
