Anyone know if there is better linux support in domino 6.5.1…Currently the 6.5 have issues on Linux… as there is no support for NPTL and the java is 1.3.1 and skip the compatlib…

I guess Lotus employees need a refresh… they are lagging behind the overall development of the world. J2EE is the enterprise standard and Lotus still plays around with legacy such as Lotusscript. Well, we are waiting for a big step forward!!!

i guess they have tryed to create a linux client . but they face a lot of issues… :O)and i would like that ibm/lotus start to fix Domino server issues… to support newer glibc first… who want to run a domino server on redhat 7 or AD2.1 with Singel CPU…

Are you having issues with RH or AD version you are currently using?
I mean I don’t see a problem with running those versions (though they are old). There are small companies (like print shops or insurance) using a Linux server to do their office networking. Their boxes have not been upgraded/updated in over 2 years. The uptime is like 700+ days.
There is always a risk to be “bleeding” edge.
I just wish IBM/Lotus would not issolate themselves by not wanting to have the software on the general distributions of the Linux os’es.

Whilst I appreciate people would probably like a Linux client, any unix variant clients were pulled a long time ago. If they’re going to bring a client out for Linux, I expect they’d need to do it for all other Unix variants too.
Personally, I’d rather see the development team spend their efforts working towards a bug free Win32 client.

True… but impossible! for 2 reasons:
1 - The way they developed Notes, using it own libraries, own dlls and all. You can see that none of the GUI in Notes remotelly resembles any of the other windows programs
2 - Bug Free Win32. It says it all. As long as MS keep writing software that doesn’t handle memory pointers effectivley, Notes will never be bug free =)

There will never be a Linux Notes client. Get used to it.
IBM’s support of Linux will be achieved through iNotes (Mozilla compatibility) in the short-term, and the forthcoming Eclipsed-based rich client in the long-term.
This has been covered here extensively. The QE costs for a KDE version (there is no Linux client per se, anyway. It would have to be developed for a specific windowing environment.) would be astronomical.
Subject: WishList - Linux Client - IBM is apparently not eating their own Dog food.
Proposedly IBM has something like 15,000 Linux desktop users in house. I actually put this question to my IBM/Lotus account rep, if IBM has all these users using Linux then they are not using Lotus Notes. If its not good enough to use it in house why should I continue to use it? Could IBM please foward on the memo that says they are completly behind Linux on to Lotus.

I love Linux as much as the next nerd. But one word Usability, the average desktop user is not ready for it yet. The GUI is still way hard to use.

That would be more than nice… but:
1 NPTL was only in RH9 when R6 was released, afaik no other distro used it.
There will be no support for NTPL in any R6.x version i have heard.
2 jre included in R6.51 will work on RH ES3, you can already test that, look for one of my posts here.

i would like to say shame on IBM… They are pushing for NGPT …
And i have found that NGPT do not work with JRE 1.3.1 … so whay IBM not upgrading the JRE in Domino to 1.4.x

Hmm, might it be you are mixing NGPT and NPTL?
Yes, NGPT was developed by IBM but the first link you are referring to has latest news from march 2003.
NPTL is the threading model which is inside kernel 2.6 and various Redhat releases with Redhat kernel 2.4.
NPTL seems to have won the race.
Your second link proves that IBM has made its JRE compatible to NPTL (read carefully and read search my post regarding Domino R6.5 and RH ES).

Well yes, the problem lies deep inside Lotus… they are outdated… they are to near to Windows… they still run Lotusscript…
IBM Lotus needs 5000 fresh employees who ware Open Source hats, drink out of java cups and show Linux to their girl- & boyfriends…

Well, instead of growing old and grey waiting for a notes client on linux, I decided that I needed one anyway. I am running Notes R5 & R6.5 since 2 years on my linux laptop (yes, it’s a IBM, no THIS is not relevant) on WINE. First fiddling with it, struggling to get it running, it has become pretty easy in the meanwhile. R6 was long impossible to run, but with 6.5 it has become very easy (even the installer runs properly). Looks like IBM is using this inhouse too.It is not the most elegant solution, but it works and it does it with a minimum of Windoze tech.
