(6.0.1)Attachments from Network Links(SMB) Macintosh

Hi!

When composing messages and then trying to attach files from network link made via the Finder on OS X 10.2.x, I find that I am getting an error message after I perform a “File/Attach” function and it tries to apply the attachment to the message.

I consistently get the following message:

File Truncated - file may have been damaged

  • Then it removes the file from the message.

This happens with any file on any shares that I have linked to using the Finder and the workaround has been to simply copy it to my desktop, then attach it. This gets to be a real pain after a about 3 messages during the day…

Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

Thanks!

/Rick/

FWIW I have had some problems using networked files from a mac in general, i.e., reporting incorrect file sizes (The reported size was way too large). Usually this involved linux based servers running Samba. That was in OS/X 10.2.x where x<5. OS/X 10.2.6 seems to have resolved the file size issue. So perhaps this is an Apple issue which might be fixed by the upgrade to 10.2.6

Did you ever try to open an Adobe Illustrator File from an SMB-Network drive?-> It fails to open.

What happens in this case might be the same to Notes…

When you write/save/copy files to a smb network drive your mac will split the resource and data fork into two files. The resource fork is saved in an invisible file.

e.g. “readme.doc” will be splitted in “readme.doc” and “.readme.doc” (attend the leading dot!)

While accessing the requested file Illustrator wants to read the resource fork of the file (although it is not required to open the file) and - you guess - fails to find it.

For Illustrator the file is incomplete and might be damaged - but it is not.

When you copy the file back to your local filesystem your mac merges these two files again and everything works as expected.

Looks like this isn’t going to be fixed for some time…

Not sure what you mean by a “network link”. Is that the same as making desktop alias to point to a network folder? If so, the latter works fine for me.

I don’t have the problem when attaching documents that are same server connections via SMB when I attach files in Mail.

It appears that I only have the problem with Lotus Notes accepting the attachments over connections that I create using the Finder / Go / Connect to Server in OS X. Operating with those files in other applications work just fine as well. To me it appears that Notes is having a problem attaching the files to the messages… I really don’t know…

I saw a post/reply indicating that they applied 10.2.6, but 10.2.6 isn’t out yet, the latest version that I am aware of for OS X is 10.2.5.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Rick

Ok… I found the update to 10.2.6 and applied it. But when I returned to the office this morning to try it, I found no positive results and that I still get the same

“File Truncated” errors on attempts to perform a file attach…

Any other ideas?

OK… I tried it when I got to work and it failed in the same way for me.

I still think it is an Apple problem and is related to the issue I identified in my prior post.

I tested it two ways:

First I used the native Apple mailer and attached a file on the linux server which was a 2.4 KB word processing file. The file showed up as 2MB in the attachment sequence in the Apple finder but when it appeared in the mail window it was correctly reported as 2.4 KB.

Second I attempted to do the same in Notes 6.0.1 and the Apple finder again reported the file as 2MB. Of course since it is only 2.4KB Notes will then think it has been truncated when the eof comes up at a mere 2.4 KB.

As usual, it appears that Lotus is probably following standards and being cautious in its coding processes by actually (gasp) checking that the transfer across the network is complete. Apple appears to have a Finder problem. Or perhaps a problem in their implementation of SAMBA.

I am curious: please try the same experiment and tell me what file sizes your finder reports.
