2 Notes Sessions on the same computer?

Hi there,

There is a computer in my factory with 2 different production lines, crews, and managers. The 2 managers are in a control room with all sorts of gadgets, etc. One of their gadgets is a pc that runs Lotus Notes, some office documents, and two other programs related to plotters and compression testers. Although they use the same programs, they need their own session for all of them. what they are doing now is logging off of everything for the other guy, including notes, then logging themselves in to see their data. Obviously not a good solution.

We would just get another computer and use a KVM, but due to all the extra machinery hooked up that they share, its not really practical, and it may not even be possible.

I’d really like to enable fast user switching in XP, and have them just switch users, keeping all their apps open. This works with all the apps except Lotus Notes. When I have notes open for one user, and try to open it for another user, I get the following message:

You cannot use the Administration program while the Dominao Server is running. Either shut down the Domino Server (but keep the file server running) or choose the icon labeled ‘Lotus Notes’ instead.

Does anyone know how I go about running two sessions on the same machine?

Thanks,

Chris

Subject: 2 Notes Sessions on the same computer?

Chris,

I’ve set-up my Lotus Notes to allow me to run more than one client at the sametime. However, it’s within the same XP user so I’m not sure if this will work for you or not… But something to try:

(I have no idea what IBM’s policy is on this and how standard this is…)

Assuming you have Lotus Notes installed

c:\program files\lotus\notes

and your data folder is probably

c:\program files\lotus\notes\data

I recommend you have different data folders for each ID (once things are working you can/should wipe out c:.…\data)

c:\program files\lotus\notes\data_user1

c:\program files\lotus\notes\data_user2

You will need a notes.ini file for each user in the corresponding data folder. Edit each notes.ini for each user and update things like

Directory to point to c:\program files\lotus\notes\data_user1 or data_user2

Spell_Dir to c:\program files\lotus\notes\data_user1 or data_user2

(basically anthing that pointed to …\data now becomes \data_userX )

Then you need to update the Lotus Notes Icon that each person lauches to

Start in: c:\program files\lotus notes

Target: “C:\Program Files\lotus\notes\nlnotes.exe” “=C:\Program Files\lotus\notes\data_user1\notes.ini”

Note you MUST use nlnotes.exe (not notes.exe)

and for each user you point to their notes.ini file in their data directory.

I think that’s it. Let me know as I might have forgotten a detail as I’ve haven’t had to set one up in a while.

Good Luck

Glad it worked.

Having two different installation of Lotus Notes client, into separate folders might do the trick.

Also in the windows short cut which triggers Notes client make these modifications:

  • instead of notes.exe, make it nlnotes.exe

  • change the “Start in” directory to respective installation directories.

Also update both the notes.ini file so that it points to respective data directory, id file, mail file etc…
